As a young man of color growing up in Orange County, Isaac Alferos is no stranger to rejection and racism. He lives by the words of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman in Congress: “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

Through the Male Success Initiative at Cal State Fullerton — where men of color are empowered to achieve their potential — Isaac found like-minded peers and the support he needed to pursue his passion for social justice in higher education.

“As a man of color whose success was fostered in my community, I recognize I have a duty to make my success, my community's success — to ensure our narratives are never forgotten.”

Now, as an appointee to the California Student Aid Commission, he advocates for all Californians — particularly historically marginalized students — to have access to affordable higher education.
